The Protocol of Remembrance

This afternoon at 3:00PM EDT (8:00PM BST) we have an opportunity to join with our friends and allies in the United Kingdom to pause for one minute of silence and remembrance in honor and memory of Her Late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

If one is the in the United Kingdom, there are many services being held around the country from the largest cities to the smallest of towns. Proper protocol is to plan to be where you can pause all activities and conversation. The custom is for those driving to pull over, turn off the engine, and stand outside your car. Gentlemen should remove their hats and unless tuned to the moment on television or on a computer, it should be turned off.

For those of us here in the United States and in other countries around the world who wish to join in the Moment of Remembrance, do what feels right for you. If you are in public or with others, simply share that the Moment of Remembrance tribute is about to occur and invite them to join you in the minute of silence. No one should be embarrassed to ask, and no one should refuse the invitation.

BBC will cover the moment live on television, and many other networks will too. If you are at home and wondering what to do – again do what you feel most comfortable to you. As for me, I will likely be with friends, and we will stand in living room, and with heads bowed, reflect and give thanks for a life truly well lived. God Save the Queen.
